Yes, you're right... I probably should have said "many" instead of "most." What's interesting here in Sweden is that many families of 4 live in 1000-square-foot apartments and don't see it as a "crunch." It's about living smarter and closer, and unused space is seen as a waste. It's definitely changed our view on things, and we plan to look for a much smaller place when we move back.
It's so true that we in the West are of a few cultures that have a long way to go in living in a way that is more community oriented as opposed to every man or woman for themselves. In other words, in our culture these days, it's unusual to see families living and working together to run a household for more than one generation.
In the West for many years the size of our homes and cars have been status symbols, with a bigger is better attitude.
The reality is If we all made an effort to live in more modest means and with a better sense of community, it would create not only a greener world but a more peaceful world as well.
I truly believe that Al Gore's head and heart is in the right place. Now, if I'm asked that in order for Al to be the best example he could be, should he go a step further with his dwelling in question here? .... sure. That would be a great move on his part. However, if he doesn't, should we ignore all of the great work he has done to help save or world and to help create awareness in Global Warming? NO! Of course not.
Many "green" celebrities have "big" homes that are "green homes", but that require "a lot" of square footage for such a small family unit. Are we sitting there saying that they're really not green, or dismissing their efforts?
Basically, turning our society around is not done in a day. It's going to take some time before we really see a "complete" green make over in our Country. Fortunately however, just talking about such things is a critical first step in creating awareness and moving forward. Edited by: Joy Jackson, Life & Wellness Coach on Dec 7, 2008 8:05:17 PM |
