Celebrity Planet: Newlywed Jewel is Married to a Good Cause

Singer Jewel pulled off a hush-hush wedding last week, marrying her longtime boyfriend, rodeo star Ty Murray, in the Bahamas. But two days before she said "I do," she was in Nashville, Tenn. supporting "A Kiss for Country," a campaign dedicated to ending domestic violence.

The multi-platinum singer/songwriter — along with a group of 20 more supporters — exercised her green thumb to spruce up the backyard area of the Morning Star Sanctuary domestic violence shelter. The Nashville Star judge, who just released her first country album titled Perfectly Clear, helped transform the barren outdoor area of the facility into a beautiful haven for the women and children who reside there.

Two days before her wedding she's getting down and dirty to help strangers? Nobody can accuse her of being a bridezilla. Future brides, take note.

In this week's issue of Star magazine — the one with babies Shiloh Jolie-Pitt and Suri Cruise on the cover — they dedicate their entire StarStyle section — 4 pages! — to green fashion. Some highlights? Ali Landry loves the My Bag Cares tote ($25) and The Hills star Lauren Conrad wears Gypsy 05 clothes, including their maxi dress that's made with organic bamboo, natural dye and a softener derived from soy beans. Many more celebrity-enjoyed products are in the spread if you're looking for wardrobe and accessory suggestions.

Motherhood has done wonders for Nicole Richie. With past troubles far behind her, the former Simple Life star is about to launch a Web site for the charity she and boyfriend Joel Madden founded, the Richie Madden Children's Foundation. The couple have been donating to the charity themselves since before their daughter Harlow was born — they donated their baby shower gifts to 100 families in need — and have since asked their friends to donate to their charity instead of buying gifts for 1-year-old Harlow.

"The Web site will be a registry, like for a bridal or shower registry, where low-income women list things they need for their babies," a source told the New York Daily News. "More well-off people will then go on and buy stuff for the children." Very clever... and generous.

I have a friend who loves Jack Johnson and brought her young son to one of his concerts this week. Well it seems like that's a great show to attend as Jack's contracts stipulate that event organizers must compost and recycle at least 50% of the waste at his shows. Additionally, they must buy carbon dioxide offsets to cover his shows' energy use.

Gone are the days of demanding only yellow M&Ms or bottled water at a certain temperature, right? Well, right on to JJ.

Laila Ali, who appeared on Dancing with the Stars, is gearing up for the birth of her first child by prepping a green nursery. "I am trying to stick to products that are earth friendly and free of chemicals that can be harmful to children," she writes in her new baby blog. "You know, I am trying to follow the advice I have learned in books such as Raising Baby Green. It is not always easy so I am taking it slow." Laila also blogs about her plans to have a home birth with no drugs. Read all about it if you're so inclined.

Until next week...
