Lightening Your Life with Florescents

The new florescent light bulbs we just purchased to replace all of the lighting through out our home are wonderful. I am so impressed with the improvements they have made with the variety of florescent bulbs available. You can be green while enjoying soft lighting through out your home.
I know some folks that were reluctant to go completely florescent through out their homes because the lighting caused them eye strain (or they felt the lighting was strange to them). I have since encouraged them to explore the new and improved florescents and most of them have finally made the switch.

I just made the switch too, the company I work for, McLeodUSA, gave every employee 5 flourescents to take home and use. I really like them and will be buying them in the future.

Yes, thank you for mentioning this!

My Mother recently mentioned this to me as well. I am very excited to get my hands on some before our long winter season hits. Living in the Pacific Northwest, purchasing some full spectrum florescents are going to be a must!

Well, unfortunately, the reality is that fluorescent bulbs use less electricity and are more effecient. But- they all contain the extremely poisonous substance mercury which when put into the earth does not ever break down.

So which is actually better? Especially if one of these bulbs happens to break inside your home and leach mercury which you can then absorb? Believe me, detoxing mercury is very very hard.. I know because I've had to do it. It can take years and make children very sick among other health risks. Not only that, if your parents were exposed to mercury, they in turn pass mercury on to you in utero which can lead to immune deficiencies. It's scary nasty stuff.

Fluorescent bulbs may be more "green" whatever that actually means since they're not really very green, just more cost-effective, but for health safety reasons I'm sticking with good old non-toxic incandencent bulbs.

Glass alone takes hundreds of years to break down naturally and is enough of a landfill problem without adding mercury to the mix which can then get into our landfills, our soil, and our water.

I find it best to really look into things thoroughly before labeling them "green" and not just believe what manufacturers tell you. They're running a business, you know.

It would seem that CFL's may very well be more green. On treehugger.com they offer that  incandescent bulbs,  because they use more fossil fuel, to produce as well as use, that the result is a higher level of mercury emissons. The highest source of mercury in America results from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal. Also the usage rate of incandescents to CFL's is 13 to 1. That's not to say that safe handling and disposal of CFL's isn't very important. Personally I'm more concerned with our exposure to so many sources of PVC's. We talk about our dependance on oil in regard to transportation and energy, when if you really look around sooooo many of the things in our world are petrochemical in origin. It's all a bit mind boggling!

The other risk that nobody mentioned about CF lighting is that the light is being rapidly switched on and off. CF lights emit a lot of high-frequency EM noise, which may have a long-term impact on health. Our bodies use tiny electrical signals for all sorts of healing and structure maintenance; such noise can throw those systems off. Read Oschman's book "Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis" for more information about this. Note: Candace Pert of "Molecules of Emotion" and "What the Bleep" fame wrote the forward for this book.

Pregnant women and families with small children should be very very careful or avoid CFs entirely.

LED lighting is even more efficient than CF lighting and has essentially none of its risks. The lights are expensive; people can work around this by changing their habits. For instance, you could have a couple of nice CF lamps and move them around from room to room as needed. Use flashlights more. Be creative!

Gaiam now sells LED light bulbs that fit in standard 120V sockets.

What’s Your “Body Burden”? Take the Toxins Test

There’s a new phrase in town — “body burden” — and no, it doesn’t refer to the weight you gained over the holidays, nor that husband who doesn’t help around the house. Unfortunately, body burden is no laughing matter. It refers to the level of chemical contaminants that are in our bodies. Scary stuff like mercury, [...]

Prince Albert Embarks on Eco-Expedition

For most of his life, Prince Albert II has been dubbed a playboy. Now, it looks like he’ll be known as an eco-crusader. The 50-year-old ruler of Monaco, whose parents were Prince Rainier III and the ever elegant Grace Kelly, kicked off a month-long expedition on Monday to view the impact that global warming has had on the [...]

Take a Vacation (Just Not From Recycling)

The French motto is “C’est la vie.” But when the glass jars, aluminum cans and plastic bottles started adding up during our holiday vacation in Paris last week, my conscience said otherwise. I admit, a few baby food jars did end up in the trash before my husband and I wised up. At home, with all [...]

Smudge Out the Old for the New

Lighting dried white sage, blowing out the flames and then fanning the embers to smoke as much as possible to pervade a room is an age-old way to change the energy and vibration of a place. Called smudging, smudging is traditionally used to purify an area of negativity and to induce a feeling of serenity. [...]

Diddy Gives Safe Rides to New Yorkers on New Year’s Eve

I’ve lived in New York my entire life yet I’ve never been in Times Square when the ball dropped. I’ve walked by the tourist zone shortly after the clock stuck 12 — wading through piles of confetti and trash — and partied a few blocks away, but I’ve always avoided the eye of the storm [...]

God is in the Eco Details

I have been accused of putting the mental in environmental. I truly believe the most successful spaces always get the details right: proper use of varied lighting, complexity of texture, subtle art, and the many other nuances that transform a space to make it exceptional. Taking it one step further (hence the mental reference), [...]
