High Ankle Sprain?

Any advice for what type of exercise I can do with a high ankle sprain? I start PT in two weeks - if I screw up, I can require surgery which I desperately want to avoid - but I figure there must be something other than running I can do over the next 6 - 8 weeks...

Is it possible to do "upper body Pilates" while sparing my ankle (on which I can put NO weight?)

High Ankle Sprain?

Not sure what you mean by a HIGH ankle sprain, but I did a good one a couple of years ago.  My foot went out from under me on wet gravel, and I hobbled back home.  I iced and compressed with ace bandage.  I received A LOT of reiki, and I did range of motion exercises with no weight on it.  After that I graduated to elastic band resistance and then finally to weight bearing exercises with wobble board and heel raises.  After a couple of months I had an ultrasound as a diagnostic tool to find out I had completely torn 2 ligaments and one was partially torn, I saw the orthopedic doctor who wanted to know why I hadn't come to see him when it first happened.  I asked him what he would have done, and he said he would have put me in a boot.  That's exactly why I did not go to him at first, those things throw you totally off, more problems later with shoulder, hip and back.  As far as the rest of the body, by all means I worked out, I even did Yoga.  Through it all I ALWAYS LISTENED TO MY BODY, so when it said enough, or back off, I did.  Good luck to you, and after you recover, ask your PT if you need orthotics- shoe inserts for your arches, and also invest in some Yoga Toes!

Hello,

Is it a strain(muscle) or sprain(ligament)? Is there a tear of any sort? Do you have any other physical or medical conditions that would affect you while you were exercising or because of the exercising?

These are a few questions that it would be good to answer before beginning any exercising. You also mentioned surgery. This may suggest that the injury is pretty serious.

Typically injuries are not something that you force yourself through. Rehabbing from an ankle injury or any injury for that matter is not boot camp. There is no point ( or glory ) in finding out how much you can take. It won't make your ankle heal any faster. In fact, it might make it extremely worse.

When you do start PT here are a couple of things to consider:
1. Its your body and your health which means its your responsiblity to do the tedious exercises that you may get.
2. Don't let your PT make it worse. If what they do makes it hurt, tell them so. If they don't seem too sympathetic, fire them and get someone who listens to you.
3. Limited weight bearing, low impact, full range of motion exercises tend to help more than aggressive high impact work.
4. As was said in another comment: "listen to your body"
5. If you are in pretty good shape, you will probably heal pretty fast.

Best of luck
